Immune System & Zika

Before we launch into panic mode and go out to wipe off pharmacy shelves of mosquito repellents to fight Zika, we should perhaps take a step back and calmly scrutinize possible factors that may be putting us at higher risk of getting Zika.

First of all, the mozzie that bites you needs to be one that has bitten an infected person. Not all mosquitoes carry Zika virus.  So let’s not be overwhelmed by fear.

We try our best to take precaution against mosquito bites by: covering up our body, using repellent sprays, staying indoor, etc.  We also remove any stagnant water in and around the home by cleaning or changing vases and water-collection trays.  Our environmental agency does its part by fumigating the surroundings to reduce breeding grounds of mozzies.

But perhaps we have overlooked a major key to protecting ourselves – a strong immune system!

The Zika virus, like any other virus, poses a greater threat to people whose immune system is compromised, e.g., the young, the elderly, the sick and those who are stressed out.  Hence, one of the best defences would be to boost your immune system.

Taking good care of yourself by boosting your body’s immune system will certainly lower the risk of you getting Zika virus infection. Basic ‘To Do’ include: having plenty of fluid and rest, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and managing your stress.  A body that is highly stressed, sleep-deprived or chronically in pain tends to have weakened immunity.

Some supplements and herbs will also help support your body’s immune system to fight off infections.  Examples are: black cumin seed, turmeric, echinacea, garlic, probiotics, vitamin C, zinc, selenium and glutathione.

Taking good care of your body and boosting your immune system will go a long way in fighting off Zika or other infections.
